Story

Help Bring a Life-Saving Defibrillator to Downs Banks

At Coffee n’ Cones, we are proud to be part of the Downs Banks community, and we’re fundraising to install a public access defibrillator at this popular local destination.

Downs Banks attracts thousands of visitors each year, including walkers, runners, cyclists, families, dog walkers, and nature enthusiasts. Whilst we all hope a medical emergency never occurs, the reality is that sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time, without warning.

Each year in the UK, over 30,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, yet fewer than 1 in 10 survive. In a cardiac arrest, every second counts. Without immediate CPR and defibrillation, a person’s chance of survival can decrease by around 10% for every minute that passes. Early CPR and rapid access to a defibrillator can dramatically improve the chances of survival.

Despite this, public access defibrillators are used in only around 9% of cardiac arrest cases, highlighting just how important it is to increase access to these life-saving devices within our communities.

Ideally, a public access defibrillator should be located within approximately 500 metres (0.3 miles) of where it may be needed, allowing it to be collected and brought back to the casualty within a matter of minutes while CPR is being carried out.

Currently, the nearest registered defibrillator to Downs Banks is located at Barlaston Golf Club, approximately 0.8 miles away. During a cardiac arrest, this distance is simply too far. Retrieving a defibrillator from nearly a mile away could take several precious minutes, reducing the casualty’s chance of survival at a time when every second matters.

That is why Coffee n’ Cones is working with AEDdonate to bring a public access defibrillator to Downs Banks, helping to protect visitors, local residents, and the wider community.

We are delighted to announce that AEDdonate has already pledged £1,000 towards this project, made up of:

£700 from Jamie and Joe’s Walking Challenge Fundraiser 2026

£300 from the Stone AEDdonate Charity Shops

This fantastic contribution has given the campaign a brilliant start, but we still need your support to make this life-saving project a reality.

Whether you’re a regular visitor to Downs Banks, a local resident, or simply someone who believes every community should have access to emergency life-saving equipment, your donation can make a real difference.

Please support our fundraiser if you can. Every pound donated brings us one step closer to installing a defibrillator that could one day help save a life.

Together, we can make Downs Banks a safer place for everyone.
