Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My Great grand mother, Grand father, and now my Auntie and Dad have all had Alzheimer's, and the wider family have all witnessed it's corrosive effects.
My son Jonathan and his wife Nicola (both in their 20s) invited me to join them in the Gatorade relay Triathlon which was the spark that re-lit my passion for endurance sport. In my youth I had run mountain marathons, cycled the Alps, but since knee reconstruction, and now aged 53, super-fitness was a thing of the past. But now the inspiration of my son Jonathan & his wife Nicola, and the motivation of raising awareness of, and funding for the Alzheimer's Society was all I needed... but if I was going to do it - I'd do it properly and not be the old bloke in the team who lets the side down!
The mountain bike and old banana bike were dusted off and in July 2014 I started regular (hard-as-I-could) riding on the Isle of Wight. Determined to get fitter and faster, over the summer I clocked up over 800 miles, and was persuaded by my ever-supportive Carly to invest in a race bike. The Isle of Wight provides every opportunity for interval training, with a variety of hills and some flatter options, and on one ride I'd managed a decent average of 23mph before a crash on a smooth slippery road. 3 weeks of recuperation (and Christmas) later and it's now time to get back on the fitness trail. Mountain bike though, through the winter, to avoid any more mis- haps and massive Haematomas!
Now for the final few weeks training programme... I'm now beginning to think that the target of being the fastest "SuperVeteran" in the race is a tad over-ambitious, but I will still be giving it everything I've got! :-)
