Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our just giving page. We are running the London Marathon 2022 to raise money to support a charity close to our heart as well as to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rare genetic muscle wasting condition affecting around 2500 people in the UK - the vast majority are male. The body cannot produce dystrophin, a protein needed to build muscle and as a result those affected will experience a progressive loss of function as every muscle in their body deteriorates. In the early stages, boys with DMD show signs of muscle weakness, such as dificulty running , jumping, climbing stairs and getting up from the floor. With the progression of the muscle weakness, boys become unable to walk and will usually need a wheelchair by the age of about 8-11 years.
There is no cure for DMD and no treatment but medical research is promising. Funding is desperately needed to further this research and seek a breakthrough that will allow boys to live life to their maximum potential, to do things that every child ought to be able to take for granted and to give their families some hope for the future. It is believed that this will either be the last generation to die from Duchenne or the first to survive it - please help us make it the latter.
