Badwater 135 · 19 July 2021
On July 19-21, 2021, Adventure CORPS will present its legendary BADWATER® 135 Ultramarathon, the 135-Mile World Championship. Now in its 44th year , this world-renowned event pits up to 100 of the world's toughest athletes against one another and the elements in a crucible like no other. From below sea level in scorching temperatures to altitudes as high as 8,360 feet (2548m), endurance athletes from 17 countries and 29 American states plus the Navajo Nation will face off in a gruelling 135-mile trek non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA. Widely recognised as “the world’s toughest foot race,” the invitational Badwater 135 is the most demanding and extreme running race on the planet.
The start line is at Badwater Basin, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280’ (85m) below sea level. The race finishes at Whitney Portal at 8,300’ (2530m). The course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 14,600’(4450m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 6,100’ (1859m) of cumulative descent.
Runners will have to contend with temperatures ranging from 100F (38C) at the11pm start on Monday, July 19th up to 127f (53C) during the hottest part of the day whilst running 135 miles on the asphalt road the entire way which can heat up even hotter, causing runners shoes to melt and their feet to burn.
I will be running the Badwater 135 to raise money for local charity, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and I hope to raise lots of much needed funds.
The Home has been part of the fabric of our city since 1883, working in partnership with local authorities and police services by welcoming lost, stray and abandoned pets from all corners of Edinburgh and the East of Scotland.
As a passionate ambassador of 'Adopt Don't Shop', my values align perfectly with Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and I have been a proud supporter and campaigner for the Home since 2017. I’m excited to be running this iconic race and hope to reach the finish line in or around the 30 hour mark still in one piece! The heat out in Death Valley is no joke and I am under no illusion that this could well be my toughest challenge to date.
