Story

Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club, proudly based in Dundrum, Co. Down, are four‑time Skiffie World Champions and a shining example of community sport at its best. Our members—spanning all ages and abilities—come together to enjoy the physical, mental, and social wellbeing that coastal rowing brings to the heart of our bay area.

A defibrillator would be a vital safety asset for Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club and the wider community because rapid defibrillation is one of the only proven ways to dramatically increase survival after sudden cardiac arrest, where every minute without a shock can reduce survival chances by up to 10% . Rowing is a physically demanding sport, and cardiac emergencies can happen without warning among athletes, volunteers, or spectators. Having an AED on-site ensures immediate response while waiting for emergency services, which can take longer to reach rural coastal areas. Beyond the club, a publicly accessible defibrillator strengthens community safety, offering protection to residents and visitors in a village where most cardiac arrests occur outside hospital settings and where local access to lifesaving equipment can make the difference between life and death.

For a rowing club, nothing highlights the importance of having a defibrillator on site more than a real-life story. We encourage you to watch the short video below, which follows the experience of a rower who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and survived thanks to the quick availability and use of a defibrillator.
