Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I impulsively decided to sign up for this trek.....I say trek its 26.2 Miles over the South Downs, yes....a marathon.....up and down hills...it seemed a good idea at the time! However I'm doing this for such a great cause...to try and give back to the charity that not only cared for my dad until he passed away but also supported my family and continue to do so...

In December 2018 my dad had been diagnosed with a cyst on his voice box which was removed in January but after surgery he was not getting any better but only feeling a little under the weather with a lack of energy. Over the space of a couple of weeks he deteriorated drastically and on the 25th February was taken into hospital. It was that day we were given the devastating news that he had liver cancer, even worse the next day we were told it was actually lung cancer that had spread to his liver and it was to advanced for any treatment and he only had 1-2 weeks to live.

All Dad wanted was to be at home, the hospital and St Barnabas worked so quickly to arrange everything we needed at home for Dad, bed, tables, medication, nurses to come in, it was a whirlwind but they were amazing every step of the way. We got him home 3 days later on the Thursday. From the moment he came home we had instant support, St Barnabas nurses rallied around and were constantly popping in and out and at the end of the phone.  On the Sunday morning they knew it would not be long and suggested we had a night sitter to be with us over night, we accepted there offer and how glad we were that we did, that night sadly dad passed away, less than a week after his diagnosis. The St Barnabas nurse did everything for us, called the Dr, undertakers, made us tea, hugged us, listened to us even sorted the room Dad was in so we didn’t have to. The worst week of our lives would have been so much worse had we not had them to help guide and support us.

It doesn’t stop there, they offer counselling for us, for our children, events that we can meet other bereaved families and so much more....

I just couldn’t believe that they have no government funding and rely solely on fundraising! With the help of you I want to raise money to give them the chance to support other families just like they did for us, you just don’t realise how amazing they are until you need them, I pray you never will but there are far to many who do.

Thank you for your generosity.
