To Whom it may concern,

My dad and I have always loved our beds and our sleep. It is a place to rest, to refuel, to snuggle to hide and to mend. To open Christmas stockings on a cold December morning. To celebrate the start of birthday. To take that first sip of the first cup of tea. To make plans for the day and to reflect on happy memories. But perhaps we both love our beds most of all for the duvet that comforts us. When the rest of the world feels like hard work, and you are getting too tired it is to the fluffy cloud that we retreat.

During Dad's illness (and as you would expect) he needed to sleep more and more, to the point where he would stay in bed all day. This proved a problem for our Magical Mum who would often strip the bed in the morning, wash, dry and iron the sheets before making up a clean bed that evening. With Dad exhausted and unable to leave his bed, Mum set off at speed to get new bedding. In a hurry, Mum chose an all white number and given that dad was spending so much time in bed went a little crazy and made it Egyptian cotton. When Mum got home she persuaded dad to sit in a chair whist she quickly changed the bedding. When Dad got in it was so fresh and soft that he smiled so wide it almost went from ear to ear. Grandma (Dad's Mum) was visiting on this day and when she saw Dad all snuggled up in his new white bedding she re-marked “It looks like you are in a Fluffy Cloud!” 

From that point on this was the name we used whenever dad needed a rest and every time he lay back on the pillow, sunk into the mattress and pulled the duvet up to snuggle around him he would smile and say “my fluffy cloud”. 

When you are faced with a difficult time in your life it is the small things that creep up on you, like needing more rest that can feel so much heavier, the world that much darker and your worry that much less resolved. However, in these moments instead of worrying Dad gave us smiles making these trips to bed just as normal and as happy as the life time of memories we have of going to bed, waking up, opening presents and celebrating birthdays and I will always feel closest to him when I am in my Fluffy Cloud.
