Story

Like individuals and organisations the world over, the trustees of Haddington Concert Society are appalled at the violence, bloodshed, and destruction in Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis. So when we were approached by our old friend, the Spanish pianist Miriam Gómez-Morán, with a recital proposal in aid of Ukraine, we were delighted to give it our support. To that end we have set up this page to publicise Miriam’s recital and encourage donations in the spirit of her generous offer.

Miriam, a specialist in the music of Franz Liszt, has given memorable recitals for us in the past. She has chosen an all-Liszt programme to reflect the very strong connections he had to Ukraine through his partner, the Polish-Ukrainian noblewoman Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, whom he first met at a charity concert in Kyiv. Miriam has prepared a Ukraine-themed recital of Liszt’s music in order to share this rarely heard music and to provide an occasion where people can come together in honour of the people of Ukraine and be inspired to give generously to help them deal with the tragedy that has engulfed their country.

She has offered the recital completely free of charge, and  will play the following programme at 3pm on 7 August in the inspiring setting of Holy Trinity Church, Haddington.

Glanes de Woronice and Album for Marie von Sayn-Wittgenstein (two cycles with Ukrainian connections)

Mazeppa (a celebrated Ukrainian military hero)

Bénédiction de Dieu dans la Solitude, written during Liszt's stay with Princess Carolyne at Woronice, one of his most expressive and beautiful  piano works

Haddington Concert Society will present this recital as part of its free short Summer Music series. There will be an opportunity to make a cash donation at the concert, but we are aware that many people don’t carry cash on a regular basis so we have set up this page to facilitate donations before or after the event. In addition, anyone who is unable to attend on 7 August but would like to support Miriam and help her raise as much as possible for this vital cause can also make a donation here. All donations will go directly to British-Ukrainian Aid, who have provided and will continue to provide crucial aid and support where it is most needed.
