Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity.
I will be joining other young people from around the world to undertake a 10 week programme in Tanzania. I will be working to raise awareness of health and sanitation issues, engaging with local youth groups, and building projects relating to schools, libraries and medical centres. I will also be working on sanitation projects and water supply systems.
Tanzania is one of the worlds poorest countries. 75% of the population live in rural communities. Adequate access to safe water and sanitation is rare and very few economic opportunities exist for young people.
Only a limited number of female students in Tanzania go onto secondary education. In part, this is because of a lack of separate sanitation facilities allowing for privacy when menstruation begins. Constructing and encouraging the use of sanitation blocks at schools combats this and other issues such as the spread of preventable diseases.
