Diabetes UK is the charity leading the fight against the UK's devastating and fastest growing health crisis, working to create a world where diabetes can do no harm. It’s a fight that involves all of us – sharing knowledge and taking diabetes on together. Join us.

Story

Even when you run a lot, you sometimes need a reason to keep getting out there and hitting the training.  In December 2019, I ran a half marathon.  I decided to do this every month to keep me focussed and fit, and I've not yet stopped.  In January 2024, I will hopefully reach 50 consecutive monthly half marathons (I've actually completed more than sixty 13.1+ mile runs but not all can count towards my  monthly running streak).  I figured that this was an achievement worthy of raising a few bob for a cause that means something to me.  Along the way I will complete two iconic half marathon races - the London Landmarks Half Marathon, which celebrates the quirky sights of our capital city, and the Great North Run 2023, which is the world's largest half marathon.

Diabetes UK is the leading charity for people living with diabetes in the UK.  People like my dad, who has had type 1 diabetes for over 50 years. Did you know that there are 4.6 million people living with diabetes in the UK with around another 700 people diagnosed every day.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition where the body attacks the cells that create insulin meaning the body cannot function properly.  When it is not well managed, diabetes is associated with serious complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputations, but Diabetes UK funds research that has brought about life-changing breakthroughs in care, treatment and prevention of diabetes.  DUK's vision is a world where diabetes can do no harm.  I think that's hard to argue with, and am enormously grateful for any contributions, large or small.
