Story

Why do I want to raise £800?

In April 2015 Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake. Over 8,000 people lost their lives and more than 22,000 people were injured. Due to poverty and inequality in Nepal it was the rural communities that suffered the most.

According to the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage in Nepal, even though an estimated 80% of the total population has access to drinking water, it’s not safe. Children under the age of five are the most affected with an estimated 44,000 children dying every year in Nepal from waterborne diseases.

Water-related diseases are the most common cause of illness and death among the poor in developing countries and yet they’re some of the easiest to prevent.

It’s hard to believe that in a world where we can communicate instantly with people on the other side of the world, ask Google about anything we want to know and travel into space and walk on the moon there are still people dying because they don’t have clean water. I want to help change that.

So what am I going to do about it?

In April 2018 I’m travelling to Nepal to volunteer with a charity that carries out vital water-related work in rural communities. I’ll be given training in all sorts of areas that I currently know nothing about (so there’ll be a lot to learn) including repairing water tanks, digging trenches, laying pipes, building composting toilets and hand washing stations and improving waste management systems and ovens.

What’s really important is that the charity makes sure the affected communities have long term, sustainable solutions to their water-related problems so I’ll also learn to train community members and young people to become Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) promoters. They then share their knowledge with others about good practices in hygiene, sanitation, and water resource management.

What difference will it make?

One of the most cost-effective ways of achieving real, positive results with regard to health, livelihoods and social impact is by providing people with access to safe drinking water, effective sanitation and education on the importance of good hygiene practice. It could save the lives of thousands of children so they will grow up into healthy adults.

I’m determined to help make that difference in anyway I can, which is why I am fundraising for Raleigh International Trust. Raleigh works with young volunteers from all nationalities and backgrounds including the host communities. It aims to strengthen these communities by raising awareness and developing their knowledge in key areas such as entrepreneurship development and community-based natural resource management.

Please help me raise my target of £800 so I can be part of something that saves lives.
