We are a team of Cancer Researchers raising funds for York Against Cancer (YAC), a York-based charity which has raised over £15 million pounds in the last 30 years to help support local people affected by cancer.
YAC fund a cancer care centre for patients at York Hospital, minibus transport to Leeds for patient radiotherapy, as well as a state of the art mobile chemotherapy unit which delivers treatment directly into communities on the outskirts of Yorkshire. As well as providing
practical support for people living with cancer, YAC are passionate about
cancer prevention. They fund community education programmes in
local schools, cutting-edge research by cell biologists at the University of York’s “Jack Birch Unit”, and recently YAC has made dermatoscopes available to GP surgeries across the Vale of York to enable earlier detection of skin cancers.

Jeff Coulson (70), a member of the Long Distance Walkers Association
(LDWA) was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and underwent major surgery to have his bladder removed and replaced with a portion of his intestine to create a “neo-bladder”. His surgery was performed by Mr Nick Smith, a consultant urologist who did his PhD training at
the Jack Birch Unit. Scientists from the Jack Birch Unit team are joining together with Jeff, his wife Pat, their daughter Kate and members of the LDWA for a charity walking challenge. On the 30th June
we will take on the Hambleton Hobble, a strenuous 30-mile route with 4500ft of ascent over the North York Moors. The scientists are hoping that they won’t hold the walking club up (too much!), finish before sunset and raise lots of money for YAC.
