Story

Hi, I’m John, but mostly known as JB!

Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page. Last year, I was admitted to intensive care for almost 3 weeks after falling drastically ill with Coronavirus. It was a horrific time for my family and I, as we planned my funeral and I confirmed the details of my life insurance policy with my wife.
At this point, I was certain I wasn’t going to make it.

Thankfully the heroes in the hospital have helped me make a full recovery and this year I am making huge lifestyle changes to become healthier after promising my son, Sam, that I would. My main goal is to lose 40kg by my 50th birthday in September, meaning I can ride the world’s fastest zipline with Sam. To achieve this goal, I have begun counting calories, exercising more and controlling my portion sizes, with plans to start swimming and cycling in the near future. Sam is already incredibly proud of me and my dedication to becoming healthier, and we are looking forward to doing the zipline together!

My chosen charity is the NHS Charities, who are a national independent charity who support the NHS staff, patients and communities. With a network of over 230 charities across the UK, they work to take the pressure off the overstretched NHS so they can continue their vital, life-saving work. Through the pandemic the work of the NHS has not gone unnoticed, from fundraisers that went viral and a round of applause on our doorsteps. The work of the NHS has enlightened communities around the UK of the importance of the health service. Sadly, the pressures on the NHS and staff have been unrelentless with more staff than ever facing burnout.

The NHS staff which helped me to get through my illness were the heroes at the peak of the second wave of the pandemic, and they all deserve medals from the tough working conditions. After my experience last year, I am determined to support the NHS the way they supported me. All donations to this JustGiving page will go to the NHS Charities to help support them, as-well as encouraging me on my mission to lose 40kg by September this year.

Thank you,
JB
