Story

The GAP Charity, a West Bromwich out of school play provision, announces its first ever runner in the London Marathon.

The Virgin Money London Marathon is one of the biggest fundraising events in Great Britain bringing thousands of people together to raise money for different charities. Last year over £60m pounds was raised for excellent causes, and that figure is expected to increase again after
this year’s marathon which takes place on Sunday 22 April.

The Charity’s first ever runner to take part in the Virgin Money London Marathon is 31 year old Les Trumpeter from West Bromwich, who is a Director at Oldbury based Select Lifestyles Limited and was at the official opening of The Gap Charity in 2000.

Les said “I was very fortunate to have been drawn in the general marathon ballot in October without being attached to a charity, and after discussions with Andy I was delighted to be able support the team. The
Gap Centre holds some happy childhood memories for me having attended from the age of 10 - 16, so it feels nice to give something back. I have a half decent level of fitness as I usually compete in 10k’s and trail runs, but to reach the desired level fitness for a marathon means I’m currently out running 3 or 4 times a week.”.

Andrew Bent, CEO and Charity Founder of The Gap said “this is a great opportunity for the Centre to raise its profile as well as raise funds towards our vision to become a Flagship Christian Family Centre.  We are honoured Les has chosen to support us in this way, and proud we had some impact in his life in his younger days.”

The Gap provide vital before and after school activities, as well as holiday play schemes for children aged between 4 – 11 from their base on Hargate Lane.
