In the UK, 1 in 10 babies need specialist care at birth. SSNAP supports sick & premature babies and their families in the Newborn Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Imagine your newborn baby needing specialist care at birth. Instead of those very special days getting to know your baby as a family, you’re catapulted into an unfamiliar world of incubators, wires, medical tests and interventions. While your baby has specialist treatment, we provide emotional and practical support to help you through the trauma & upheaval. We’re there to help families cope, and provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and nursing expertise that could save babies lives.

Being told that you have a slipped disc in your back and that the doctors have to operate straight away otherwise I would become disabled is frightening enough, but also being 32 weeks pregnant and being told that they will have to deliver your baby 8 weeks early by emergency c section to be able to operate on my back was even more frightening.

Harry was born on 01.01.18 by emergency c section 8 weeks premature weighting a healthy 5lb.

I was then operated on on 02.01.18 to remove the slipped disc in my back. It was so difficult not being able to see your baby for the first time but also to be at different ends of the hospital was even more heartbreaking. Harry was on the intensive care unit at the John Radcliffe hospital for almost a week before being transferred to the low Dependancy unit. Harry was in hospital for approx 4 weeks before being able to come home.

The staff at the special care baby unit were amazing, they helped me to bond with Harry and provide him with the things he needed without being next to him and being able to hold him. They helped us and the family through an emotional and difficult time.
