Story
So, recently, I started this running thing with couch to 5k, and I actually managed a whole 5k without stopping! Since March, I have ran 3 times though! I wanted to challenge myself to do something worthwhile, which is why I have decided to run 67km over the space of a month. I'm not a runner, so this is going to be a huge challenge for me.
Why 67km, you may ask. This year, my dad would've been 67 (we share the same birthday - I may have interrupted his 40th birthday celebrations!) so I'm running 1km per year = 67km.
My dad unfortunately suffered from MS for over 10 years. At the beginning it wasn't so bad but it soon started affecting his day to day activities. This is because MS attacks the coating of your nerves and the damage disrupts messages travelling along nerve fibres all around your body - these messages slow down, become distorted and may not even get through. His MS got so bad that he could no longer take care of himself. My mum had to become a full time carer to look after him but he still ended up in a care home. The steady decline in his health hugely affected my mum, who passed away a few months before he did. MS can be such an unforgiving disease and around 100,000 people in the UK have it.
I've witnessed first hand how MS affects a person and those around them. It would be an honour to raise over £500 for the MS Society, as they are a charity who support those living with MS and their families SO much. The centre in Derby gave so much support to my parents, and my mum had people she could talk to about coping with it. I miss them both so much, every day, and I'd love to be able to support others who went through the same thing we did as a family.
