Story
I heard about the RNLI Torbay raising money with their own challenges to meet/break a target of 60K. I went along to speak to some of the crew, got to see where they are based (had a lovely cuppa and a chat) and found out more about the need to raise funds urgently.
Those who know me, know I love a challenge, and so alongside the crew battling through and completing theirs, I wanted to help out by raising money too through my own challenges.
So in March I will do the Abergavenny 3 Peaks, then in June I’m running the VOGUM 40 mile coastal run (completed it last year so aiming to beat my time!) and then in July I’m running the PIGUM 30 mile mountain ultra.
There are many reasons why someone may need help out at sea, and many of the people the RNLI are called to help are those who are struggling with challenging mental health. My business, Launch Into Life, is about supporting people with their mental health, and so it felt fitting that I help the RNLI Torbay to help those people and all people when their lives are in danger.
Below are the words of RNLI Torbay to explain more about the fundraising…
TORBAY LIFEBOAT CREWKILIMANJARO CHALLENGE 2023 - HELP US RAISE THE FLAGFrom March 2022, RNLI Torbay station crew members embark on a series of six intrepid and fearsome tasks, culminating in the 8 oldest climbing to the summit of Kilimanjaro in February 2023. All to raise money for their local lifeboat station. Our crew have bravely accepted a relay of challenges including skydiving, endurance swimming, cycling, rowing, driving, that culminates in February 2023 with the 8 oldest crew-members (average age of 60) hiking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Worlds highest freestanding mountain and seventh highest in the World! We believe these challenges comprise the most ambitious fundraising events ever attempted by any volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew.
