Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Here is mums story...

A great deal on a package holiday meant that after 7 years, I could take my daughter on holiday with my parents, big sister and her family. We were really excited and saved and saved to make it one to remember!

Saving wasn't easy for my mum and dad either... money was a bit tight but we helped each other to save. Mum had lived with health issues for years and started to get more anxious about going away as she got older.

After Christmas we started 'holiday shopping' - we bought most of our dresses from charity shops... I didn’t care as long as mum was happy...

July 11th 2018 was set to be a big family holiday. 2 weeks in Turkey (15 of us!) It was amazing... very hot for the first few days and mum struggled to climatise...

The first 7 days were great! Private boat trip - mum decided to swim in the beautiful turquoise sea, family meals out, a trip to a water park with a private beach where Mum and Dad sat drinking cocktails in the hot sun, and an exciting Beach BBQ and Foam party saw them dancing the night away to their favourite tunes.
Mum and Dad had re-kindled their romance after 41 years of marriage!

The fun came to a stop on the 8th day when mum woke up with abdominal pains... it carried on through the morning and she was struggling to breath normally - she suddenly became very ill.

A doctor was initially called, who then called for an ambulance straight away.. mum looked so pale and felt cold to touch.. we knew something wasn’t right...

Mum was rushed to Life Hospital, Manavgat. After approximately 1 hour and many tests, including CT scans, X-rays and blood tests, the doctors advised us that she had a very low white blood count, and the scan had she shown something inside her body that shouldn't be there, so they would need to open her up immediately to take a look.

After 3 and a half hours, the doctor informed us that her Bowel had perforated and waste food was traveling around her body poisoning her. Seven and a half hours of surgery to remove the bowel that had turned Gangrene, and several hours more cleaning her internal organs, (with 38 litres of saline water). Mum was taken to Intensive Care and we were told the next 48 hours were critical as the Gangrene had caused Septic Shock!

We managed to see my mum for 5 minutes after the operation to quickly tell her to keep fighting and stay strong... we were lucky as she opened her eyes and knew we were there... she even reached out as my dad walked into the room...

Mum improved slightly on the 1st day post surgery, then deteriorated over the next 5 days. Her Kidneys stopped functioning and she had water on her lungs.
They decided to transfer her to a specialist hospital with a specialist intensive care unit were they had some of the best doctors in the world That specialise in blood.. a sample of her blood was taken from her groin and sent off for tests even before she went herself to try different tests in their labs
We followed in a car behind as they rushed her there in an ambulance.
Unfortunately for us, this was over an hour away from our hotel...

We had the heartbreaking task of calling our Nanna (Mum's Mum) and her Siblings. Our Big Brother flew out on Monday 23rd July to a completely shocking sight of Mum losing her fight.

Sepsis had got hold of her body, destroyed all her white blood cells and one by one her organs were shutting down - until finally her heart gave up.

Mum passed away at 8.45am on Tuesday 24th July 2018.

We are extremely grateful to all the staff at ‘Life Hospital’ Manavgat Turkey for treating mum with the best care they could possibly give her.
Also thanks to the lovely owner of the Kentia Apartments in Side. Ahmed, the manager and Ozy, the receptionist who gave up so much time to help and support us through the terrible ordeal.

We have been through a roller coaster journey and my mum fought with all she had to try and stay with us but we believe that unfortunately her time was up... god needed an angel like my mum.. she was the most beautiful, caring, loving and supportive person ever to be known and she will be very sadly missed by us all... we are glad that mum is home from turkey and finally at peace and safe from pain with her dad and little sister who will now protect her.
every time we see a butterfly we know she’s around and that helps us to keep strong...

We would like to help other people in the same or similar situation by raising money through Mum's charity which is called... “Now She Flies With Butterflies” and this is linked to the UK Sepsis Trust.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
