Story

A 200 MILE WALK THROUGH SCOTLAND FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Well, it’s been six years since my last fundraising trek and I’ve decided that this is the year I need to do it again before old age finally catches up with me. (You mean it hasn’t already?)
Last time my son Pat and I walked approximately 160 miles in 8 and a half days, raising a total of £ 1,969 for Cancer Research. Now, six years older and rapidly approaching retirement, I have decided to walk 200 miles in 11 days by myself. (Makes perfect sense!)
Why 200 miles?
Since my Mothers passing I’ve had very little reason to visit my birth place of Elgin. With this in mind, I thought a symbolic gesture would be to walk ‘Home to Home’ – from my hometown of Elgin, Morayshire to Eddleston, Scottish Borders, the place I call home.
It’s times like this I wish I’d settled in Lossiemouth.
I have decided to raise money for Cancer Research once again.
As you are no doubt aware, an unprecedented number of famous musicians and actors passed away in 2016, many as a result of a battle with cancer. It really hit home that many of these – in particular a number of the musicians I grew up listening to – were only a few years older than myself.
The main reason I have decided to walk for Cancer Research however, is due to the death of my friend Roy McGillivray aged 64. Roy grew up in Elgin before moving to Musselburgh, where he dedicated his life to teaching and performing music. Roy was well known in Elgin and I had known him for most of my life. I was deeply saddened by his struggle and ultimate death from cancer. Although I am not dedicating this walk to his memory, his suffering was the catalyst for me to get the ordnance survey maps out and start planning.
The reason I am walking by myself this time is because Pat now has a full time job (hurrah!) and is unable to join me. Admittedly, in a fit of exhaustion after our last trek he did swear he would never walk with me again, but he assures me it’s a simple case of being unable to take time off work!
If anyone reading this would like to join me on any part of the trek – be it a couple of hours, a day, or the full walk – please do get in touch, your company would be greatly appreciated. (Honestly – Pat was referring to the strenuous nature of the walk, not my personality!)
It is clear that the need for research into this disease is as great as ever. Please help me raise money for this cause by sponsoring this walk. All money raised will go straight to the charity and any amount you can spare, large or small, will truly help.
Thank You, Peter
