Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Poppy-Rose and 14 years ago I was rather eager to meet my Mum, Dad and big sister. I was born 6 weeks premature, weighing 4lbs 14oz and spent time in what was then called, the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), situated in Maidstone Hospital. I was cared for by many people and my Mum and Dad were taught how to look after a tiny baby who was in an incubator. I then became extremely poorly and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Kings College Hospital. My birth was very scary for my Mum and Dad but the hospitals saved my life.
As you can imagine, my parents were very worried about how I would develop and grow up, but I can happily say that I am now a very healthy, happy 14 year old girl who loves to dance, sing and am a social butterfly who loves to spend time with my family and friends.
I want to help raise awareness for the brilliant work the nurses, doctors and professionals do in the, now named, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as raise funds for the NICU that will go towards helping other babies and their parents. To do this, I am running a marathon, (26.2 miles) over the course of 3 months and am asking for donations please, no matter how small, in order to help the unit.
This fundraising will also be a part of the volunteering section of my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. This award encourages children aged 14-24 to "gain essential skills, experience, confidence and resilience to successfully navigate adult life."
