Project 66,795 · 31 December 2018

We’re Mind, the mental health charity, working across England & Wales. We believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Story

Possibly the worst idea ever...

Throughout 2018, myself (Nick), Kathy Allen, Jason Clancy, Peter Davis and Phil Slater will be undertaking a burpee challenge (with Malcolm Pollock joining us for the year with the press-up part). Not only at our studio, but all over the world, Burpees are notoriously one of the most hated and taxing bodyweight exercises around...

Standing upright - hands to floor - jump feet back - perform a press-up - jump feet in - stand up and jump with arms overhead. Chest must touch the floor at the bottom, both feet must leave the floor when jumping up.

We will be accumulating 1 burpee a day, for 365 consecutive days. For example, 1st Jan = 1 burpee, 2nd Jan = 2 burpees, 3rd Jan = 3 burpees etc right up to day 365 - 31st December = 365 burpees. No days off...for a total of 66,765 burpees completed in the year.

As long as the days burpees are completed in 24 hours, they can be performed however you like (doesn't have to be in one go).

As a Personal Trainer, more and more people are coming in to the studio with some form of mental health issue (1 in 4 will experience a mental health problem in a given year) and this issue has often spurred people on to make the choice to come in and make a positive change.

Physical and mental health go hand-in-hand, but it seems much more common nowadays to neglect the mental side in a fast paced world with everything at your fingertips.

Training and exercise can have a HUGE positive impact when it comes to mental health, such as increased confidence and self esteem, it can alleviate anxiety and depression, creates progressive structure and not to mention the actual endorphins released when you're pushing yourself. It's not uncommon for clients to come off medication after a few months of regular exercise and a more wholesome diet.

That is why we've chosen to support the charity MIND, in an attempt to raise awareness of mental health in general and encourage people to get more active, speak up if they need help or even just have a chat. The money raised will help offer services and counselling to those who need it and help change public attitudes towards mental health.

I will be documenting the hideous journey via Facebook (Nick Lane) and Instagram Stories (@lanerthetrainer). Any encouragement you can give would be much appreciated!

A big thanks to Nicholas Gibbins for the idea and motivation - please check out the Project66795 page on Facebook to see other around the world performing the same!
