In memory of Rob Dobie

Motor Neurone Disease moves fast. It takes away time, it takes away independence and it has no cure. Every day we support people affected by MND. We fund ground-breaking research. We campaign for better care. We’re here for everyone who needs us. Because with MND, every day matters.

Story

Robin Dobie (Rob)  was born on the 5th September 1975 to Marjorie and Arthur and was the youngest of their four children. Rob’s brothers Tim and Alistair and sister Louise saw him grow up to become a keen sportsman. He played football for a number of teams both in childhood and adulthood.  He also loved cricket and played for Edgworth cricket team for many years.

Rob grew up in Edgworth village and enjoyed more than just a
few pints at the weekend in the Cricket Club and local pubs and would sing on the karaoke in the Rose and Crown most Sunday Evenings.

He dearly loved the annual 3 legged race that used to take place every year in the village. Rob went to Turton High School where he made many friends including two of his best friends Matt Knowles and Sam Griffiths. Rob met Laura when he was 19 and they got together a few years later on Laura's 21st birthday, before marrying in June 2005.

Rob joined the Police force in 2001 and was based in Wigan.

Their first child Scott William was born in August 2004
followed by a little girl called Mia Robyn who was born in August 2007. Their family was complete.

By September 2011, and with both children in school, life
had started to get a little easier. But only a few months later Rob began
experiencing symptoms of slurred speech, muscle twitches, cramp and
fatigue.  After numerous tests and appointments Rob was cruelly diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) on the 4th July 2012.

MND is a life limiting degenerative illness with no cure and
a life expectancy of 2-5 years.  Rob remained the big strong guy he'd
always been and when Laura asked "why you?".... he would reply
"why not me?"

Their world, and that of his loving family, had been torn apart. Scott and Mia were only 7 and 4 years old at that time.

MND took everything from Rob that he enjoyed including his ability to play sport,  food shopping, cooking, driving, his independence, the ability to eat, to speak...the list goes on. Rob fought this awful disease for almost 6 1/2 years with courage and dignity.  He lived beyond medical expectations and managed to see both his children go to
high school.

Rob very sadly lost his battle on the 26th September 2018 when
he passed away peacefully at Bolton Hospice.  Rob was a larger than life
Character who will never be forgotten.

Edgworth Cricket & Recreation Club have decided to hold an annual event in Memory of Rob and the event will be named the “Rob Dobie
Charity Cup”. The inaugural event will take place on Sunday 4th August,
2019 in the form of a Celebrity T20 Cricket Match and we would be delighted if as many people as possible would come along and support the event with proceeds from this Just Giving page going exclusively to fund Motor Neurone Disease Association’s work on research.
