In the UK, 1 in 10 babies need specialist care at birth. SSNAP supports sick & premature babies and their families in the Newborn Care Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Imagine your newborn baby needing specialist care at birth. Instead of those very special days getting to know your baby as a family, you’re catapulted into an unfamiliar world of incubators, wires, medical tests and interventions. While your baby has specialist treatment, we provide emotional and practical support to help you through the trauma & upheaval. We’re there to help families cope, and provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and nursing expertise that could save babies lives.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Our very good friends, Hanna and Lez Lovelace welcomed their twin boys, Edward and Oliver, 16 weeks early on 13/10/20. Born at exactly 24 weeks they weighed only 620g (Edward) and 610g (Oliver). They spent 140 days in hospital, going through numerous blood tests, blood transfusions, x-rays, antibiotics, one surgery and two eye procedures.

Hanna and Lez didn't get to have their first cuddles with their boys until they were 8 days (Edward) and 10 days (Oliver) old. Supporting them through this very difficult time was the wonderful charity SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborns and their Parents). They fund psychological teams to support the parents, they provided hospital grade breast pumps which meant Hanna was able to establish her milk supply and the boys had nothing but her milk throughout their hospital stay. They provided specialist chairs at the bedside to make cuddles extra comfy. SSNAP also provided presents for the boys at Christmas and books for Hanna and Lez to read to them, as well as countless snacks so the parents didn't need to leave their babies. More than anything they were a friendly face and a non medical person to support Hanna and Lez through a very challenging time.

Edward and Oliver are now back at home and doing great. To say thank you for the support this great charity gave our friends, our 6 year old son has asked to do some fundraising. He's going to attempt to run/scoot/cycle 140km (the boys were in hospital for 140 days) within 16 weeks (the boys were 16 weeks early). Please donate whatever you can to help this charity continue it's support of babies and parents in NICU.
