It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

Hello, my name is Mark Segasby (Seggy).

I am running with the goal of raising £5,000 for the charity www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk. My mum passed away on June 6th 2018 from pancreatic cancer. She was only 64 years old and taken from us within 4 months of diagnosis. I am running it for her, her family and anyone else affected by this disease.

I never really understood why other people did stuff like this, running a marathon for charity, but I do now. There was nothing I could do to fix mum, however hard I tried – it makes you feel helpless. This is something I can do, and it might help someone else.

£5,000 is a lot of money and it will be a huge challenge to raise this. Which is why I am documenting the journey. It’s important for those suporting me to see how much effort is going to go into this. Plus sharing my journey should encourage as many people as possible to support me.

Not so long ago I was very over weight and unhealthy. I had been fat all of my life and hit a peak of 24 stones or more. To be honest I don’t know how much I weighed, I avoided the scales for years, well to be more accurate… I had gone off the end of the scales at our house, they only went up to 20 stone.

That all changed in Feb 2016, I bought a book to try and improve my terrible red ruddy skin and the spots on my face, called – Clear Skin Forever (www.clearskinforever.net/book). I didn’t mind being fat, but I hated having bad skin, it was embarassing, I felt unclean. As a result of following the diet in that book, my skin improved within a few weeks, the weight started to drop off and I had a huge amount of energy – I started walking miles every day.

Fast forward to now and I have lost about 9 stone in weight and have already run 3 half marathons. No one would ever have expected me to start running and enjoy it, but I really do. I was out of breath walking the kids to school round the corner before. I’m sure I’ll talk more about my weight loss journey to date too in this blog, and share some of what I have learned along the way.

So my goal is not to just complete the London Marathon, but to do it in style. I don’t want to walk half of it. I want to get a credible time and train hard to do this. I am still over weight, and in my opinion too heavy to run 26 miles at the moment.

I havent weighed myself for a while, I’m scared to (I will soon). I have put on some of the weight I lost. Partly due to moving to a vegan diet during the last year, a skiing injury, and I guess due to dealing with mum being ill and coming off the rails a little with exercise and diet due to that. Having the marathon and this blog will sort all of that out! I’m a man on a mission.

I am recording my journey to this marathon in a blog: www.seggyruns.com

So watch out for future blog posts. You will see what training I am doing, how the weight loss is going and how I’m adjusting my vegan diet to acheive that. I am excited to think about the person I will become by April 2019. I hope you enjoy seeing my progress and will support the charity with a donation.

Much love
Mark x
