Story

Just over a year ago my Dad was diagnosed with Oesophegeal cancer, after having tests for acid reflux. It was a massive shock. He underwent surgery in September to have his Oesopheagus removed, it is one of the biggest operations our local hospital trust does. (An Ivor Lewis op - 'Google it'). Being in his early 80's there was a high risk of complications, but as my Dad had kept himself fit, the consultant was happy to go ahead. The day before the op my Dad took himself off and rode a 10k on his bike at top speed!! The operation was done and the cancer was removed and despite some nasty infections and his wound struggling to heal....I say wound, its like a shark bite! He has just recently been discharged from the care of the local GP nurses. Although the cancer is gone, his life will never be the same, physically and I suspect mentally too. He has to plan his daily diet and eat little and often, if he overeats....(i.e a cake and a cup of tea at the same time!!) he is poorly for a few hours, the sweats, sickness and has to lay down and let it pass. But he is alive to tell the tale, and for this I am so very thankful.

So why am I doing this challenge...as I said my Dad had kept himself fit by running. In his 50's he competed in the World Veterans Championships in France, ran the Great South Run in 57 minutes and at 50 years old ran the London Marathon in 2 hours & 44 minutes. Basically he was quite an amazing runner.

So I thought I would challenge myself to complete this run! Here's the twist... I am no runner! I hate running! The only reason I was any good at it when I was younger was because I was always late for school, and now I am older I believe the only reason anyone needs to run is....a)for a bus or b) if there is a dinosaur chasing you.

At the beginning of the year I couldn't run a bath without getting out of breath, so for me to run 10 miles will be a massive challenge, both physically and mentally! But having seen what my Dad and many other cancer sufferers go through on a daily basis, my challenge is nothing!

Please sponsor me and help me raise funds for this amazing charity, that provides support for cancer sufferers and their families.

Thank you x
