Story
Working as the Devon independent visitor coordinator for NYAS has been my job for the past 6 years but I feel passionate about improving the chances of children in care. I am fortunate to work with dedicated social workers & independent reviewing officers, committed carers and my lovely colleagues from NYAS to match wonderful children in care in Devon with altruistic volunteer mentors called independent visitors.
This video explains what an independent visitor does.

The children and young people I work with show amazing qualities of resilience, humour and perseverance. However, the odds are stacked against children in care. Adults who spend time as children in the care system are 70% more likely to die prematurely than those who do not. In terms of mental health, nearly half of children in care meet the criteria for a psychiatric disorder in comparison, one in ten children who are not looked after suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder. Attainment at school is 53% lower for children in care and only 6% of of care leavers go to university compared to 43% of those not in care. 39% of care leavers are not in education, employment, or training, compared to 13% of all young people of that age. It is estimated that 25% of those who are homeless had been in care at some point in their lives. When they leave care 6% have no one providing emotional support and nearly one in ten of care leavers only had support from a professional worker. I do not believe we should casually accept such poor life experiences. The independent visitor scheme aims to help improve the outcomes of children in care by matching them with a trusted adult who can help motivate, inspire, advise and support a child in care to have a better childhood and to have a better chance of a happier adulthood.
I don't have much of a clue about social media but have done some twittering about my trip here https://twitter.com/SimonHeyes1?s=09
I unicycled from Ilfracombe to Dartmouth from the 23rd to 28th August 2021 to raise awareness of the independent visitor scheme in particular to recruit more volunteers and to raise more funds. For example, it costs £36 for an adult or child to go to Paignton zoo, £32 to go to Pennywell farm, £30 for Woodlands, £44 for Crealy, £40 for a one-to-one golf, tennis, or singing lesson. Every penny raised will go towards funding meaningful activities that young people in care can do with their independent visitors.
