Welcoming a Refugee Family to Slaley and The Shire

Slaley and The Shire Welcomes Refugees is raising money for CITIZENS UK

Welcoming a Refugee Family to Slaley and The Shire · 7 February 2022

We are the biggest community alliance in Britain, bringing together hundreds of faith, education, labour and residents' groups in communities across the UK. Citizens UK encompasses the Living Wage Foundation, Sponsor Refugees and PACT.

Story

We are raising funds to enable a vulnerable refugee family to come and rebuild their lives in Slaley and Hexhamshire, Northumberland.

82.4 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide due to persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations. This includes 26.4 million refugees, around half of whom are under the age of 18. 1 in every 95 people on earth has fled their home as a result of conflict or persecution. More upsetting still is that children make up 42% of all forcibly displaced people.

Afghanistan is experiencing a humanitarian crisis as over 40 years of violence and insecurity have brought more suffering and internal displacement for millions of Afghans, with a further half a million internally displaced in 2021 alone. Coupled with increasing natural disasters, chronic poverty and food insecurity, the resilience of refugees and host communities is being stretched to the limit. There are 6.6 million Syrian refugees worldwide. With the devastating effect of the pandemic and increasing poverty, every day is an emergency. Sadly, these countries are not alone as Yemen and South Sudan continue to be in turmoil.

Slaley & The Shire Welcomes is part of the UK Government’s Community Sponsorship Scheme, which enables communities to be directly involved in the resettlement of refugees in need of protection in the UK. The refugees that we will resettle are selected by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from one of the world’s many refugee camps.

As a Community Sponsorship group, Slaley & The Shire Welcomes will literally do everything the family needs to feel safe and comfortable with the ultimate aim of providing a secure base from which they can thrive in the UK. This will involve things like finding a house for the family, organising school provision, helping teach the family English, making sure that the family has a GP, and facilitating form applications for things like housing benefits.
