Story
Sprint for Life is my personal challenge to raise money for British Heart Foundation Scotland. I created it to raise awareness and help fund research in memory of my life-long friend, Alastair Kennedy, who died of a heart attack 10 years ago.
Sprint for Life is about me training for 18 months to compete in the 100 metres in the 2018 British Masters Track & Field Championships - 4 years after surviving my own heart attack. Alastair and I used to compete in 100 metre sprints together, which is why this is such a fitting tribute and fundraiser.
Why would you support me for running a mere 100m metres when some people run 26-mile marathons for charity? Sprinting 100 metres flat-out at the age of 53, after surviving a heart attack and more than 20 years since I last competed, is going to take 18 months of continuous training and sacrifice - that is what I am doing in return for your support.
Heart attacks end the lives of far too many people like Alastair. A heart attack nearly ended mine. If we can raise enough money we can make a real difference, so people like me and Alastair can be diagnosed and treated before it's too late.
The vast majority of heart attacks can be prevented once we have a reliable and affordable way of testing people for Coronary Heart Disease. I was lucky, countless others are not. Let's change that and save some lives.
