Plymouth Hospitals Charity raises money so that NHS Trust staff can provide the best possible healthcare, above and beyond NHS funding. Your donations are used to improve the experience of patients and families visiting hospitals and the staff that care for them.

Story

In 2018, after complications post surgery, I was placed in a medically induced coma and admitted to the neuro intensive care unit at University Hospitals Plymouth (Derriford). After 12 days in ICU, I was transferred to a ward where my recovery began. You can read more about my story on my blog www.fromdeliriumtoreality.com

During my 3 month stay, I fought many battles. Alongside my family, what got me through were the staff. Their care and compassion was neverending and unwavering. Whether during the day or in the middle of the night, they shared my lows and my highs, my tears and laughter and got me through the toughest of times. They will never know how grateful I am - they saved my life and they saved me.

3 years on and my recovery is still ongoing. Amongst many things, loss of muscle and strength were significant and despite various attempts, nothing improved. But this year I discovered Strength Training and found my 'thing'! Thanks to my personal trainer I am now stronger than ever and the confidence I had lost in myself is returning.

I want to say thank you to the staff who cared for me on ICU and on the ward by raising money to purchase items that will support them in their work, allowing them to support individuals in a similar situation as I was. When it came to thinking how I'd do it..........it had to involve weights!

  • Challenge one will involve pushing the approximate combined weight of an ICU bed and ventilator on a leg press - a total weight of 140kgs!
  • Challenge two will see me lifting 70kgs, the approximate weight of a ventilator, in a deadlift!

My aim is to complete both challenges between 23rd November and 3rd December, the exact time I was on Intensive care. I'll be sharing updates and progress photos and hope to livestream or video both challenges.

These challenges are no mean feat and it would mean so much to be able to start bringing my recovery full circle by completing this challenge, with your support. Anything you can give will make such a huge difference.

Thank you.
