Rugby League Cares is dedicated to supporting the Rugby League family and its local communities. Our work focuses on four key areas Welfare, Benevolent Fund, Grants and Heritage. We nurture the past, present and future of the game.

Story

I'm Matt King. Ten years ago, with the help of an amazing team of rugby league people, I became the first person in the world with my level of spinal injury to complete a half marathon.  Being able to take part in and complete the 2006 Great North Run was life changing for me.

Our team did the Great North Run double in 2007 in support of the late, great Mike Gregory.  Mike's wife Erica & ex-players Terry O'Connor, Kris Radlinski MBE & Dave Lyon ran with us that day.

In November 2007 our team set another world first in the New York Marathon when, with the help of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, we crossed the Central Park finish line.

In the years since those amazing team efforts, I have been able to achieve so much more than I could ever have imagined after my accident.  There had, however, always been a desire to do the treble in the Great North Run.

The treble is now on! On September 11th this year a team of rugby league people will be helping me reach the finish line in South Shields.

It's going to be tough getting back on the horse after so long away from training, and I also have the added distraction of my upcoming nuptials in July, but we will be there at the start, ready to represent rugby league as best we can.
