The Hospice helps people to live their precious lives well. Our care has many forms – at home, in our outpatient Spring Centre or through specialised care in one of our Hospice beds - and is defined by each person's need. We rely on donations to raise the £5m we need each year to fund our free care.

Story

I've just completed the trek from the far South West to the far North East of England, from Land’s End to the Scottish border just North of Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

A total of a just over 750 miles (1200 kilometres or probably more like 2000 kilometres including training!) over some 58 days in all weathers, across hills, moors, fields, tracks, bogs, large chunks of Englands' amazing National trails, & the occasional country road.

The walk, in stages of one to two weeks, started in September 2008 and now a mere eight years and eight months later I completed the final 45 miles at the beginning of June.

The plan was that my brother-in-law Bob and I would do the whole walk together, however it was not to be as Bob sadly passed away in 2009 after a mercifully short battle with cancer.

I was struggling to carry on but the family rallied round brilliantly & so after an eighteen month gap the walk restarted, in the snow, where Bob & I had left off, on the edge of Exmoor in 2010.

Since then I've had  many fellow walkers; Emma, Sara, Steve, Tom, Ben, Chris, Eric, Neil and Andrew with amazing assistance from family & friends including Judy, Paddy & Bethann, Peter, James, Evie, Annette & Tony, Zoe & Jon, Becky & Carl, Sally P, Gill & Michael.

Sally although not an official walker has provided fantastic back-up in the form of pick up, drop off, provisions, equipment procurement, nursing care and rescue (on more than one occasion!), love & encouragement & much, much more.

Most of you will know I also had major surgery a couple of years ago and hence no walking for another three & a half years from March 2013 until starting again in October last year.

So we would be delighted if you feel able to sponsor the walk raising much needed funds for The Hospice of St Francis.

As many of you know both Sally & I are volunteers at the Hospice which provides a wonderful service to over a thousand people & their families & friends each year. We need to raise £5million per annum with only 20% coming from the NHS.
