Story
Trace;
I remember the day Dad got diagnosed with mixed Dementia. I was sat in my a-level biology class and my sister called to tell me the news. He’d always had a bad memory but after mum died we noticed his memory decreasing more and more. 6 years of caring later and Dad has just moved into permanent residential care. Watching Dad fade in front of my eyes and experiencing complete role reversal has been heartbreaking and at times I have said it can feel like im grieving him whilst he’s still alive. We’re so lucky that despite his dementia, Dad is always smiling, happy and is still committed to being the best dad he possibly can be. The carers in his new home already adore him.
Both as a nurse and as a daughter of a dad with dementia I long for growth and transformation in the treatment of dementia.... The Alzheimer’s Society are transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day they find a cure, they will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
