My story

In October 2009, I along with 21 others, set forth on a charity trek across the Sahara Desert, unaware that it was to change my life forever.  The trek was such an amazing experience and over £50,000 was raised for our chosen charity, Help a London Child -Registered Charity Number 1091657

A year later and I was at it again, trekking even further across the Great Wall of China, raising even more money to help London’s poor and needy children.  Upon returning from this trek, I teamed up with a friend from the Sahara and together, we planned an amazing if not daunting challenge.  For the next 3 years, we would continue doing charity treks around the globe and aim to raise thousands of pounds for Help a London Child.

We are now facing a trek through the rainforests and mountains of New Zealand in 2011, a trek from the Pacific to the Caribbean coast in Costa Rica in 2012, the 3 Peaks Challenge in Britain in 2012 and then the big one.... Mount Kilimanjaro in 2013!

Please show your support for our cause and sponsor or donate to us today.  Together, we will improve the lives of those children living in need in London.  You can donate online at this page or you can attend one of our many events we will be holding in the 3 years, including Quiz Nights, Race Nights, Murder Mystery Nights, Talent Contests, Raffles and Cake Sales.  If you would like more details of any of these events or would like to donate items for the raffles or cake sales, please email me at g.sammer@btinternet.com
I have had the opportunity to how the money improves the lives of the Children of London and it amazed me as to how even a small amount of money can bring a huge amount of joy to their lives.  We can only continue this with your support, so please, donate today and Help a London Child.

Help a London Child - The Charity

Help a London Child provides financial support to grass-root projects working with London’s less advantaged children and young people.

Help a London Child was launched in 1975 by our founder Lord Attenborough, as 95.8 Capital FM's charity. Over the last thirty four years the charity has raised in excess of £20,000,000 and awarded that amount to over 10,000 small groups and charities.

“LESS ADVANTAGED KIDS DON'T HAVE LESS IMAGINATION,
JUST LESS OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS IT.”

                   -   Lord Attenborough CBE, Life Patron

What we do

95.8 Capital FM's Help a London Child is a grant giving charity, which means twice a year the charity provides practical and lasting support to thousands of youngsters aged 18 and under. Help a London Child grants aim to directly assist and give opportunities to the Capital's children and young people who:

  • Experience poverty and disadvantage
  • Have/are experiencing abuse, neglect, homelessness, violence or crime
  • Have an illness or disability.

How do we decide where the money goes?

Each year, an independent panel from the voluntary sector assesses the hundreds of applications for funding received by HALC to decide where the money should go. Help a London Child allocates grants to registered charities or voluntary and community groups that aim to make a positive difference to children and young people’s lives. Grants are targeted at the areas of greatest need, and money is allocated geographically to ensure that children and young people in all corners of London receive a balanced share of the money raised.

In 2008, 400 groups across London were awarded a share of £705,165.

In addition to our small grants program, Help a London Child launched its large grants program in March 2005. As a result of raising even more money in recent years we have been able to dedicate, over a 3-year period, £50,000 each to four charities in the Capital, which means:

In 2007 Help a London Child awarded £1,040,406 to 481 children and young people's groups, benefiting over 120,000 children and young people.

Of these, 477 are small grants totalling £860,058, and 4 are large grants who were awarded £180,348.

How is the money raised?

Throughout the year Help a London Child is involved in fundraising events including black-tie galas, sponsored treks and runs. The charity also relies on the generosity and imagination of the general public to donate money.

Help a London Child is an appeal run by Global Charities. Registered charity number 1091657, and a member of the IoF.
