12-11-11 A huge well done to Jono Falls who raised a massive £200 for this challenge! Thank you to everyone who sponsored Jono, he did really well, 1st one out of the group to complete the challenge! Well done!
Thanks for taking the time to visit Gareth's JustGiving page.
Last year we very unexpectedly lost an amazing person at the young age of just 20. Gareth was an extremely loving brother to Sarah and I and we miss him so much every day. He was a great friend to lots of people and touched the lives of everyone around him with his wonderful personality and sense of humour. He is very sadly missed in so many ways by his family and friends, but we treasure the many happy memories we hold. Gareth was a very keen rugby player; in his own words he ‘just loved the game’. A large group of Gareth’s family and friends would like to honour his memory by raising money for The RFU Injured Players Foundation; a charity that supports rugby players who have suffered life threatening injuries.
On the 12th and 13th of August 2011 a large group of Gareth’s family, close friends and rugby team mates will be undertaking the ‘National Three Peaks Challenge’ in his memory. The challenge involves climbing Ben Nevis (Scotland 1344m), Scafell Pike (England 987m) and Snowdon (Wales 1085m) all within just 24 hours! We begin The 3 Peaks Challenge in Scotland at 5pm on Friday. It will take 5 hours (with no stops) to climb to the top of Ben Nevis and back, we will then travel by coach to Scafell Pike in England, Cumbria. Most of the assent of this mountain will be in the dark as we begin at 4am; this makes the climb even more dangerous. We will complete this trek by 9am and then continue by coach to Snowdon. We begin this climb at 1pm and by 5pm we will have, very wearily, completed the challenge.
The timescale for each mountain means it is definitely not a gentle walk, and when the three climbs are undertaken within 24 hours, the Challenge becomes more difficult, draining energy and depriving us of sleep.
Gareth was a very keen and talented rugby player who played for Ilkeston Rugby Club from the age of 6; for this reason all monies raised will be donated to the RFU Injured Players Foundation. The charity supports rugby players, and their families, who are catastrophically and permanently injured through playing. The charity also strives to make the game safer through more injury prevention research and funding for grassroots first aid training and equipment. We hope to raise a substantial amount of money in Gareth’s memory for this brilliant cause.
A huge thank you from all of us taking part!
