Story
Thank you for visiting our fundraising page!
Why are we doing this?
The following traumatic events inspired us to accept this challenge:
In January 2008 Gary's mum, Sandra was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and underwent a number of operations and at present is doing well.
In May 2008 Gary's dad, George was diagnosed with a rare form of Tonsillar Cancer which needed several operations and specialist intensive treatment by the way of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. He is now on the road to recovery but has to undertake in regular visits to the Hospital for check ups.
Coupled with this Dereks mum, Brenda also had a Breast Cancer scare back in 2006 which was found to be negative which was a massive relief.
Background
What we are attempting - the Sahara is the Worlds Largest Hot Desert and the 2nd Largest Desert after Antarctica, and is almost as large as the United States.
We begin at the northern part of Erg Chebbi and then trek for two to three hours before reaching our first camp at Bouighd. We continue through the Sahara, climbing the highest dune of the Erg Chebbi, at over 170m with a view of the snowy ridges of the High Atlas mountains. Day three sees us arriving in Hassi Merdani. The final day of trekking takes us to the western side of the dunes, not far from the village of Merzouga.
