I would like to thank you all for your generous support, sponsoring me to run the London Marathon for Woking Hospice.
It was the first time that I had ever run 26 miles and every mile was made so much more worthwhile knowing that all the effort was for such a good cause.
Looking back, the training I did through the long months of winter seemed harder than the run itself. Several times during training, I suffered some form of injury and during a few of the longer training runs it seemed that finishing a 26 mile one would be impossible.
The run itself proved to be much different to any of the ones I did before and the enormous support of the crowds who lined the streets and from fellow runners was just fantastic. The first 8 or 9 miles seemed to pass in an instant and reaching 18 miles at Canary Wharf, I had a thought that I had never reached this distance without some form of problem and that the dreaded "wall" will hit soon and I will collapse on my knees.
Thankfully, I was amazed that this didn't happen. A mixture of energy drinks, energy gels, water and the atmosphere from the crowds kept me going and I crossed the finish line in 4hrs 51mins. I had hoped to finish within 5hrs so I was pleased with my time (and that I 'd overtaken Princess Beatrice at 16 miles and Richard Branson at 22 miles). I didn't feel too bad after the run and walked back to Waterloo - even running to catch a train, so I do think I will have another go at another marathon sometime soon. I have a target time to beat now.
I had marvellous help and support of friends on the Just Giving site and friends at the Woking Railway Club, The Ship Inn at Worplesdon and the White Hart in Old Woking, who organised a number of events, to help raise funds for my run. I also went onto the Peter Gordon show on Eagle Radio and this helped to publicise my appeal and raise funds further.
The total I raised was over £2011.50 and I send thanks from Chris Flemington and all the staff at Woking Hospice who, without support from everyone like my sponsors, could not be in a position to help people with life limiting illness with the incredible care they give.
Thanks again
Gary.
