What I'm going to be doing... To those that know me, it's no surprise that any sponsored challenge I'd elect to do would involve bikes.
I'm going to be riding in a team of four as part of the
CLIC24 Mountain bike race with my good friends, Matt Burden, Rob Johnson and Steve Ransom. The CLIC24 is, as the name suggests, a 24 hour mountain bike race staged in the Mendip hills with the goal of raising money for
CLIC Sargent.
About the CLIC24 It's circuit-based with 10 mile laps in which me and my team members will take turns thrashing around the course from midday, throughout the afternoon, all through the night (we'll have ultra powered headtorches!), see the sunrise come in and riding the final dying hours up to midday again. It's riding on a scale that I've not even come close to doing before and while it seems like a fun idea now - it's probably going to be pretty hellish once I'm out there (as the clock hits around 3am I'm fully expecting to contemplate what exactly it is I'm doing out there!! :D)
The Cause I'm not going to pretend that fighting Cancer is a cause that's effected me or anyone close to me, but statistically it's highly likely that someone I know or even myself could be effected in the future. The fact that it can effect children is all the more terrible!
That's a pretty scary thought and the CLIC24 event basically gives me the opportunity to support such an important cause while doing something which is normally such a personal and selfish use of my time.
Me and my Biking I've been mountain biking on and off for about 14 years but recently took it more seriously when I joined/helped in the formation of the
Cheesy Riders. I did the Bristol Bike Fest last summer (12 hour team event) and the training I did for that really transformed my life in terms of health and fitness. I've since been riding mountain and road bikes as often as I can and have developed a mild addiction to just getting fitter, faster and better! As my facebook profile states - I'm SO Awesome at riding bikes!
Training Seeing as the longest endurance event I've done to date is 12 hours, I've got some work to do to reach 24! To think some people do this solo!
I'm moving house soon so I'll have a 16km daily commute by bike to form a nice base. I'll be extending this to include a training ride on the way home a couple of times a week (additional 25km twice a week). On top of this I'll be trying to squeeze in a 5 hour ride at the weekend to build endurance. Finally I'll be swimming once a week for a bit of cross training and I'm going to join a Yoga class (find the concept quite embarissing but if it helps!!) to see if I can sort out flexibility issues I've developed recently. All in all, if I can put in 150-200km a week on the bikes, I'll be having a good week!
Thank you! Please give generously! I've not really done the whole sponsorship thing before so I don't really know what to expect in terms of a goal amount and what the ettiqute is for asking. I promise I'll literally be riding my socks off even come the last lap. I know the pain I'll be feeling will be nothing compared to what Cancer can create but I'll be thinking of that when my legs feel like giving up!
Thanks!
