It's bewildering and unsettling for anyone going into hospital but especially for children and that is why we are a fundraising hospital. We raise funds to enhance the experience of our patients by providing state of the art medical equipment and facilities and creating a child-friendly environment.

Birmingham Children's Hospital

I will be running the Birmingham half marathon in support of my close friend's daughter Jazmine Lewis, who was recently diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma which is a rare form of childhood cancer.  I want  to raise money for the Birmingham Children's Hospital for all they have done and continue to do for Jazmine.

A lot of activities that go on at the hospital are self funded and therefore they need donations in order to bring some happiness to these children as they experience some difficult times.

Here is her mother's story:

My name is Jade Lewis. I moved to Henley in Arden in 1987 with my parents and have pretty much lived here since.  I met my partner Wayne Lavery in 2000 and we have two daughters Jazmine and Jessenia.

Jazmine was born on May 18th 2001, my first child weighing in at 7lbs 7oz, she was a really healthy little girl that gave my life a meaning, anyone that has had children will know how blessed we are to be given that special gift.  Jazmine is beautiful, funny, happy and popular and has enjoyed life to its fullest.  She loves fairies and High School Musical; she loves animals, painting and creating little relics out of odd materials.  Her favourite food at the moment is cauliflour cheese with garlic bread which she will eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner!  Her favourite colours are pink and purple.  She likes telling jokes (that aren't very funny), and performing magic (which isn't really magic).  She had beautiful long blonde hair, big green eyes and sweeping eyelashes (when the community health visitor first saw Jazmine aged 4 days old she said "Well there's no mistaking this is a little girl with those eyelashes!").  My point is Jazmine is like every other child.

However, August last year Jazmine started complaining of pains in her right leg which got worse and worse and eventually caused her to limp quite badly.  After numerous visits to the Doctors who were putting it down to growing pains we were eventually referred to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

To cut a long story short on February 12th this year our lives were shattered, Jazmine was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, which affects only 30 children per year in this country.  Jazmine started her intense chemo the following week and has bravely battled on during the past 6 months.  Her hair has fallen out, her sweeping eyelashes have gone and she has a central line in her chest for the chemo to be administered through.  She cannot get the line wet which means she can no longer swim, or submerge herself in a bath, (which she used to do regularly....at least twice a day!!).

On the 8th july, Wayne and I had a meeting with Jazmine's consultant and were told Jazmine hasn't responded well to her treatment, her cancer has spread to her lungs and her leg is inoperable.  She is now on a different type of chemo for children that relapse, but her prognosis is poor.

I've known Gary Litwinko since I moved to Henley all those years ago.  Our daughters have been best friends since nursery.  Georgia-Mae has visited Jazmine in hospital on several occasions and enjoyed herself as there is always activities going on there, gluing, painting, making, sewing...you get the idea.

Gary's family like so many others has been devastated by Jazmine's illness.  Gary wants to run the Birmingham half marathon on October 26th 2008 to raise money for the Children's Hospital that has looked after Jazmine and so many other children so well.  This could have been anybody's child, and could be anybody's child, sadly it's mine.

Please support Gary Litwinko, Jazmine Lewis and Birmingham Children's Hospital who save so many lives every day.  Thank you.
