In May 2009 following our honeymoon we (My husband Chris and I) brought Buster (a gorgeous Beagle boy) home. At only 8 weeks old he was tiny with needle sharp teeth and a HUGE personality. We were in love from Day 1 and knew that Buster would be very well cared for. We had done our research prior to getting him and knew that Beagles could be stubborn. We had already booked a place at the local puppy class. Unfortunately not everyone researches the breed before purchase and without training, a firm but fair approach and support a beagle can unfortunately be a handful.
I think the biggest mistake I ever made was to click on a link about animal testing. As beagles are the most commonly used in testing institutions, the images made me physically sick and very sad. A little more research showed that a charity called Beagle Welfare sometimes take 'lucky' unwanted ex-laboratory beagles and try to rehome them. I realised that they not only rescued ex-laboratory beagles, but unwanted family pets, strays, beagles with an illness and there were even some beagles that had been rescued from puppy farms.
We knew that Buster was so lucky to have a family who cared for him but really wanted to help the other beagles who were less fortunate and had never had a real family. We knew we couldn't rehome every single beagle (although we'd love to) and the only way we could help was to raise money for all of the beagles at Beagle Welfare, so last year we did the following...
o Organised "Bark in the Park 2010" raising much needed funds and the profile of responsible dog ownership.
o A sponsored swim in the Cornish sea.
We also added a new addition to our family, Millie a gorgeous beagle who found herself at Beagle Welfare. We have really enjoyed training Millie and she is a very welcome addition to our family. Shortly after the dog show we were asked to become area officers for Beagle Welfare and have had great pleasure in arranging home visits, meeting other beagle owners and doing our best for this wonderful charity. As Beagle Welfare not only rehome beagles your money helps in many ways. Beagle Welfare also do essential research into illnesses and educate the public on the best ways to care for beagles.
Buster was our inspiration and Millie has been the motivator both of our beagles are very special to us and we hope to help the many beagles less fortunate than our own.
