Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.... this bike ride is a first for me!
I'm delighted to have been accepted on to the EMMS (Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society) Bike Ride beginning May 9th, to raise funds for rural hospitals in northern Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. The "biggest" hospital at Embangweni was founded by a Scot at the end of the 19th century and continues to serve the people of northern Malawi, regardless of race or religion but relying on the support of folk at home.
Now, the tricky part. The ride takes place in Malawi itself traveling almost 300 miles north of the capital (Lilongwe). This distance is to be covered in 5 days so yes, I will need to do a spot of training! The people of Malawi have a wonderful reputation for warmth and friendliness, so I'm sure there will be plenty of encouragement along the way.
Many of you visiting this page will, like me, probably work in the NHS and there can be few of us who have not had some first hand experience of healthcare in the UK. It may not be perfect but I think you would be shocked by the comparison with Malawi. Please be as generous as you can so that we can raise as much as possible for this worthy cause. Your giving will make a REAL difference to these people's lives.
Thanks so much for reading this far. I'll be doing my bit on the bike over the next few months, so watch our for that old chap swaying around in a fluorescent jacket at the side of the road....it may just be me!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: EMMS International gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
