Andy McCabe, Michael McCabe, Andy Frew,  Alistair Frew and Caroline Frew ran the Edinburgh Marathon Hairy Haggis Relay in 3 hr 51 min 10 s.  Our thanks to all who helped us raise £2200 for Bowel Cancer UK.

I am doing this to honour the sporting achievements of my grandfather, George Frew, exactly 100 years ago. He was a Scottish rugby international and team captain.  On 16th March 1907, after Scottish victories in his first 3 international, he played his 4th international against England at Blackheath.  Scotland won 8-3 to claim both the Calcutta Cup and Triple Crown.

George Frew - born 9th September 1883

Michael McCabe - born 9th September 1953

In November 1906 George Frew played his first game for Scotland in the first ever international against South Africa. In the following year, which was his first full international season, Scotland won the Triple Crown, beating Wales, England and Ireland. He went on to captain the team in 1910.

George Frew was a fit and healthy man throughout his life, even though he was seriously injured in the First World War. He recovered and became a company director. In the Second World War he was a colonel and led his local Home Guard. Sadly, in 1942, the then unmentionable disease of bowel cancer struck and George Frew died aged only 58. He lived a noteworthy life, but he might have lived longer with early diagnosis and medical treatment.

The family want to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK in order to help raise awareness of the disease and help those affected by it. It will be a fitting way of celebrating George Frew's sporting achievements if the funds raised can be used to help eradicate the cancer that brought his life to a premature end.
