Story

A year ago today my son George was born. I want to try to thank the people who saved his life.

George was born at West Middlesex Hospital on the 28th of July 2010. He had various problems at birth but to cut a long story short, neither of his lungs were working and he had to be resuscitated in the theatre and put on a ventilator as he could not breathe on his own. He then spent some days in neo-natal intensive care at Queen Charlotte's Hospital where he was kept on the ventilator and had various brain scans and other treatment, before eventually being transferred back to West Mid Special Care Unit for further care. I will never forget that time- it was three days before I could even hold him and give him a cuddle, and even then he was hooked up to all manner of machines. But eventually he got better and we were able to bring him home. We were lucky. It is a simple fact that without the specialist skills of the doctors, nurses and midwives who cared for him in his early days George would not be with us now and we would not have had the wonderful (exhausting!) year we have had with our noisy, funny, stubborn, shy, gorgeous little boy.

Words cannot express the gratitude I feel towards those that helped my son and I will never be able to thank them enough. We have donated to the unit before now but I thought I might try on his first birthday to raise a bit more to help them help more babies like George.

I know times are tough and I know I'm not doing some amazing sporting feat, but if you can spare any amount I will be hugely grateful and I promise to buy you a drink when i see you next.

Thank you and love

Katie, Magnus and George x
