My story

Welcome to my fundraising page!

This year my friend and I are hiking the Appalachian Trail in the USA (go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_trail for more info).

It's 2,175 miles long and should take us around 5 or 6 months - we'll be starting in late February (probably the 23rd) and finishing sometime in August. We've both just finished school so this is the challenge we've set ourselves for our gap years.

I've chosen to raise money for Tearfund because it is a charity close to my heart. In 2005 I traveled to Armenia with my Church Youth Group through Tearfund where we helped to build a house. This was a life-changing experience for me and led me to make annual charity trips to Bulgaria, Moldova and most recently to Nigeria (again through Tearfund).

In Nigeria I worked with a few of Tearfund's partner organisations, mainly hospitals and community development programmes. This trip made me appreciate close-up more of the incredible work that the Tearfund partner charities do, especially with the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Because of these experiences that Tearfund have given me, I've begun a personal mission to help disadvantaged people around the world that I hope will last for a long time.

Please sponsor me to aid Tearfund's work both in supporting charities working on the front line and in giving young people like me the opportunity to help as well in practical ways.

NOTE - I'll resurrect this page after I've completed the hike as well if you want to wait to see if I manage to do it.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Tearfund gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Congratulations on completing your challenge. Welcome home George! Donation by John and Tricia Phillips 23/07/09
