My story

About me: Hi! My name is Georgie and I am part of the 2010 Ghana Education Project Team (GEP) at Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School. Every other year the school picks 15 girls to fundraise for the charity as well as go on a life changing trip to the Nkwanta district, Ghana. We go in October 2010 and will get the chance to teach and meet the children as well as see the money we've raised put to good use. Last years GEP team raised £36K which built tourist facilities as well as the foundations of a school. Our aim is to improve the education system and the overall quality of life for children living in the Nkwanta district, Ghana. Our target is to raise £40K to finish building the school for the children and we have organized a Sponsored walk to help us achieve this target. So please donate as much as you can because every little bit really does help. Thank you!

About the Charity: A Small Charity with Big Purpose!  The Ghana Education project (GEP) are a registered UK charity looking to support the development of education and associated infrastructure in Nkwanta, a deprived area of North East Ghana. The founder trustee Gill Norris has coordinated their efforts in Nkwanta on a voluntary basis since she moved to live there in June 2004. Gill was awarded the MBE for her work with young people both in Ghana and in the UK. Previously, Gill worked as a teacher at Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School which now supports the charity by having a GEP team to organise fundraising.

The charity works closely with local Ghanaian authorities and teaching groups in order to achieve its goals. They have initiated many schemes to improve the quality of education and resources. To date the Project has:

-run training courses for teachers in Science and Maths and provided supporting resources.

-developed a literacy project to help Primary School pupils

-initiated the Nkwanta Award scheme (similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award).

-organized container shipments from the UK of school, medical and sports equipment

-financed, restored and equipped buildings for educational resources and the local Wildlife Trust

-most recently it has built the Kyabobo Centre, a Sports, Arts and Culture centre

Their Next and most ambitious aim is build, equip and launch a brand new School for Girls.
