Between 28 May and 4 June I cycled with my daughter, Jennifer, from the Great Wall of China to the centre of Beijing in aid of Mencap, the largest organisation in the UK caring and campaigning for people with a learning difficulty. We covered 375 Km in five days and both had a wonderful if arduous time.
I originally pledged to raise at least £3000 and then upped my target to £5000. So generous have people been that now Jennifer and I have raised nearly £14000 between us!! We are both paying all the costs associated with the trip to China ourselves and so every penny we raise will go directly to Mencap to support their work for children and adults with learning difficulties. In fact we think a last push could help us to break the £15000 barrier when Gift Aid is taken into account.
The bulk of the money raised has come through individual sponsorship from friends, colleagues and anyone else whose arm I can twist! £10 pays for three months' worth of toys for a playgroup for children with learning disabilities. £15 pays for a child who cannot speak to go to special workshops to learn sign language. £25 pays for Mencap to make the first visit to a family who have a new-born child with learning disability and in need of support and advice.
