Spend a few moments thinking of all the lovely ladies in your life...... your Mums and daughters, your sisters, wives and girlfriends, nieces and aunties, grandmas and granddaughters, cousins, friends, work colleagues, neighbours, your friend's families.
1 in 9 of these ladies will at some point in their lives develop breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in this country; with over 44,600 new cases in the UK each year.
It is a common myth that breast cancer is hereditary; in fact about 80% of women who get breast cancer have no known family history of the disease - just the wear and tear of living is the biggest single risk factor for breast cancer.
The good news is that thanks to earlier detection and improved treatment, breast cancer death rates in the UK have fallen by a fifth in the last ten years. Of those women diagnosed with breast cancer today, two-thirds are likely to survive for at least 20 years.
Vital funds for research and treatment can save lives. So on 16th May 2009 I'll be setting off to walk 26.2 miles round the streets of London through the night, along with thousands of other inspirational women and a few brave men. We'll all (including the men) be wearing decorated bras to symbolise the cause we're walking for - "uniting against breast cancer" by raising money, raising awareness, getting fit and having fun!
I'm sure you'll agree that this is a fantastic cause, so please dig deep - every penny counts.
