Story

Team EIA are taking part in Give It Up 4 EIA! See below for a list of things we'll be giving up for the month of January.

If you want to take part add your individual Just Giving fundraising page to our team www.justgiving.com/teams/giveitup4eia and join in the challenge.

Janet Fereday (Head of fundraising). I will attempt the near impossible and not buy anything wrapped in plastic for one month. This means I can only eat fresh veg from the market and will have to hoard supplies of pasta and rice before January to bring in all my own food.

Shruti Suresh (Wildlife Campaigner): I’m vegetarian but I’m now giving up for one month all products derived from animals in my diet, including dairy products, doing my bit to reduce the carbon footprint of dairy production.

Sarah Baulch (Campaign Researcher): I’m giving up buying or using any products with palm oil in. It can be listed under around 30 different names so it’s going to be tricky but educational. I will also sponsor buying 20 canvas bags to help the office cut bag use. I’ve had to look at too many pictures of them in dolphin’s stomachs!

Jennifer Lonsdale (Founding Director and Cetacean Campaigner): I am giving up buying drinks in paper cups and plastic bottles, and will not take any new plastic bags from shops. I will contribute the equivalent I save from not buying these drinks and will also make a donation based on the number of bags I save.

I am doing this is to prove to myself that planning in advance means I can prevent my unnecessary waste of these products, particularly plastics which pose a very real and alarming threat to the marine environment including whales, dolphins and porpoises. I can make a small lifestyle change and contribute to a reduction in throwaway consumption – and at the same time raise a bit of money and awareness for EIA.

Ben Stallworthy (Fundraising Officer): I'm giving up shopping in supermarkets and all chain shops/restaurants/bars etc. I am doing this to support independent and local business and generally become more aware of what I am buying, where it comes from and who it benefits.

Vicky (Analyst): I will give up any disposable tableware, especially those chopsticks at Chinese takeaways that I frequent…and in a bid to make an impression that I am serious about this, I will also give up…well, meat and seafood (no! But I will).

Emma Clark (Visual Comms): I am giving up kettles and all hot drinks for a month to save on energy and to give up CAFFEINE!

Sam (Fundraising volunteer): I plan to become ethical/brave/stupid/hungry/(and ultimately impecunious) by giving up using supermarkets in January for the cause.

Debbie Banks (Head of Tiger Campaign): I'm giving up wine for a month, so that I can afford to by organic locally-produced wine in February :-)

Alasdair (Campaigner): Giving up meat for a month. Appreciate the veggies will be unimpressed… but hey ho.

Natasha Hurley (Global Environment Campaigner): Giving up meat for a month as part of my post-Christmas detox and because of intensive farming’s massive carbon footprint. And for good measure, I pledge only to eat organic meat throughout 2013.

Jamie Elkins (Visual Comms): I'm giving up meat for a month as a test to see if I can give it up for a whole year!

Paul Redman (Visual Comms): I'm giving up all products from sheep and cattle (all ruminants).
