ACLT 10K MARROW-THON · 27 March 2009

ACLT is a charity committed to helping provide hope to patients living with blood cancer and other illnesses where a matched donor (stem cell, blood or organ) is required to save a life. Our work is driven by a belief that no one should die waiting for a donor to become available.

Story

Firstly you maybe asking what is the ACLT and why am I supporting it and why am I doing this run?

Well first, ACLT stands for the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust, and was established on June 2nd 1996 by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis the parents of former Leukaemia sufferer Daniel De-Gale.  Sadly Daniel past away on 8th June last year, but his memory lives on through this charity.  View ‘Tribute and Respect to Daniel De-Gale’

Leukaemia is a cancer of the bone marrow. It affects the cells in the bone marrow that produce white blood cells.

"The ultimate aim of the ACLT is to raise the required funds to setup an independent ACLT Bone Marrow Register. This will allow us to undertake worldwide donor searches and testing of potential bone marrow donors in our own testing & research laboratories."

Please visit: www.aclt.org for more info.

Secondly, you maybe asking why I’m supporting it? Have I been personally affect by leukemia, do I know someone who has...the answer would be no to both, but at least I know that If myself or any of my family were to, then there is a charity like ACLT to help.

Although Leukemia like other forms of cancer is treatable, the process of treating it means a bone marrow match is necessary, and the chances are much slimmer in those within ethnic backgrounds.  view statistics

The ACLT hopes to raise awareness through events like its blood donation days, charity fundraisers and The 10K Marrow-thon.  view events

I personally back in 2007 attended one of the blood donation days at Kings College Hospital in Dulwich and was glad the I went, the response was amazing and after an hour of waiting in the queue speaking with people and giving blood I felt good that I had done my bit at possibly saving a life, But it hasn't stopped there through one of my business projects I regularly donate a percentage of my profits to ACLT.

Now the running bit, after ripping my Achilles tendon in 2005 my fitness levels have dropped and I see this not only as an opportunity to get fit, but also a way to raise money for my chosen charity.   So I ask you to please support me and the charity, by either sponsoring me on this page or on the charity on its main page justgiving/marrowthon

thanking you in advance for your generous donations.
