We are Jason Evans, Mark Colley, Ian Hardy, Brian Johnson, Michael McAlister, Andrew Bland, James and Neil. All members at Dewsbury District Golf Club.
On Wednesday 15th June at 4pm, we will tee off at Dewsbury District Golf Club and WILL NOT STOP PLAYING GOLF FOR 24 HOURS!!! We will be playing through the night with the benefit of one of the shortest nights of the year, a full moon and flashing luminous golf balls. We hope to complete the course at least 8 times in this period and are committed to raising as much for Cancer Research UK as possible through your kind sponsorship.
Our reasons for supporting Cancer Research UK are personal and many, with each team member commenting below:-
Jason Evans - My name is Jason Evans. I’m happily married and have three beautiful children. I believe you make your own luck in life and the cards you are dealt in life are yours to play. Depending on how you play represents your life; whether you are a gambler, a worrier or just Mr Safe. I also believe that things happen for a reason and I have had my ups and downs like most people but its how you deal with them and how you move forward that makes you a better person.
One of my ‘downs’ was last year when I found a lump on my leg and after initial checks was informed that it could be cancerous. After three weeks of worry I was finally told it was benign and the relief I felt was immense. I began to reflect on how cancer could have affected me and my family and it also made me think of family members that I have lost over the years to cancer; Grandma’s, Granddad’s and several close in-laws. I know I can’t bring them back but after my shock last year at the age of 41 I need to show my gratitude for the help me and my extended family have received over the years from the health service and Cancer Research. Most people have been touched somewhere in their lives by cancer so help me to raise our target and let’s fight cancer together.
Mark Colley - Huddersfield Firefighter 49 yrs old. I lost my 49yr old sister Alison to Ovarian cancer in April 2010 then just 7 months later my Father Peter died of Bowel/Bladder Cancer aged 73. We were devastated. I was so impressed by the support from everyone that cared for my Dad and sister that I felt had to do something for a Cancer Charity. So when I mentioned this to my friend Jason we remembered an idea we had had some years ago. This combined our love for the Game of Golf and a little midsummer madness with supporting a Cancer Charity. The Madness part is walking and playing Golf for 24 hours. This is especially tough around Dewsbury District Golf Club because of the hilly terrain. It's a joy to play up here because your away from the hustle and bustle of the local towns, you're out in the fresh air and countryside basically. We might feel a bit differently when we are playing our 7th or 8th round walking in excess of 40 miles...and thats when you hit the ball straight lol.Our choice of Charity was Cancer Research UK.So please support us the best you can, remember this terrible disease can effect anyone and everyone.
In memory of my Dad big sister Alison (pictured) and you'll see me as a Golfer on our 14th Green and our Banner. So please support us the best you can, remember, this terrible disease can effect anyone and everyone. Mark
Ian Hardy - 'I am a 58 year old widower having lost my wife Mary to a brain tumour in 2004. Life is precious and too short as it is without having to combat terrible diseases like cancer. I want to help in the fight and that is why I have joined the Golfathon team.'
Brian Johson - dedicating my effort in memory of my mother who died of cancer in 1968,
Andrew Bland,- I teach acute and critical care nursing at the University of Huddersfield and as such the student nurses I teach and supervise care for patients with many different forms and severities of cancer and the associated factors with this terrible disease. In my clinical career as a nurse at Dewsbury Hospital I came into contact with many patients and their families who were affected by cancer. Doing my very best then as a nurse and now as a teacher of nursing never seems enough and as such I feel privileged to support seven other golf addicts in trying to raise as much money and awareness as we possibly can for Cancer Research UK by undertaking this golfing marathon. Research is a fundamental aspect of my teaching role and where there is research - there is hope. I hope people will join us by offering their support to this challenge.
Michael McAlister- I joined the 24 hour golf-a-thon to raise money for Cancer Research UK. My reasons behind this are that cancer affects us all and everyone knows a family member or friend who has been affected by this horrible illness.
My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and had to undergo a painful and instrusive mastectomy. My wife's mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer a number of years ago. The worry and stress dealt with by both women really hit home with me - you always think your mum is invinsible and to identify a killer like cancer is terrifying for all family members. We have been lucky so far in that both mums have responded well to treatment and we are keeping our fingers crossed.
Things were very different back in the 80's when my nan was fighting her battle with lung cancer. She didn't make it and I lost out on getting to know her.
I know that the reason our mums are getting through this is because of the ongoing work carried out by Cancer Research UK. Early diagnosis of their conditions has made all the difference to us and this has only been made possible through the developments in awareness and identification pushed forward by organisations like Cancer Research UK.
