Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
The London Marathon is run. What a day!! It was as hot as hell and there were thousands and thousands of both runners and spectators. It was like the Comrades all over again ...and there were even loads of Braai's and loads of South African support. Well I am now like an Old Wreck, tired, sore and a bit crippled, but I did finish the Marathon. My time across the finish line was a very slow 5 hours and 51 minutes. BUT I DID IT!! Thanks to my Charity for my place.... now I need to get the money in......PLEASE HELP!!!!! My thanks to Jen, Adam, Michelle (4hours 32 minutes for her run), Jackie and Ian for their support before and during the race.
This London Marathon will be my 2nd Marathon since my heart attack in May 2003. In November 2006, thanks to my step daughter Michelle, I competed and finished the New York Marathon. My time may have been a lot slower that my old marathon times, but I finished and I proved to myself that I could do it. Thanks Chelle and Jen, my wife, for encouraging me to try and do it. If I could do it, so could anyone else.
This marathon, The London Marathon, is very special to me in many ways, firstly I will be running for the H.E.A.R.T. UK Charity, one that is very close to my old condition. Since my heart attack, I have been on Cholestrol tablets to keep my Cholestrol at an acceptable level, so the Charity does have a special meaning for me. Please support me and in turn support H.E.A.R.T UK. They do make a difference. If South Africa had had such a Charity, maybe I would not have had a heart attack. Maybe I would not have been a heavy smoker. Who knows. THEY DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE....... PLEASE HELP. The second reason is that ever since running marathons and "The Comrades Marathon" in the 1980's, my old running mates, Trevor, Alan, Claus, Dutchie and I always talked about running the London to Brighton Marathon, a race that was won by Bruce Fordyce many, many times. Sadly it is no longer, so the London Marathon will take its place. Trev, Alan, Claus and Dutchie, where ever you are, this is also for you guys.
To those of you who help with a donation, how ever small, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and thank you from H.E.A.R.T. UK.
By the way, my picture was taken on my last finishing Comrades Marathon in 1991, which was a "Down" run. I made it with 4 minutes to spare. Today, the body is a wee bit larger, the hair is more greyer and I am a few years older.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: HEART UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me now!
